The travel restrictions and border closures that have been undertaken as measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus had adverse effects on numerous tourism businesses. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell defended her decision not to cancel the city's Mardi Gras festivities earlier this year, when the coronavirus had already been ravaging the US.
She told CNN that if the outbreak had been taken seriously on the federal level at the time, they would have called off the event.
"When it's not taken seriously on the federal level, it's very difficult to transcend down to the local level in making these decisions," Cantrell said, adding that the federal response "backed up by the response of our national leader."

Around half a dozen protesters blocked the Mexico-bound lanes of a border crossing over fears those coming from the US could spread the coronavirus, several news agencies reported.
The group, called Sonorans for Health and Life, is demanding medical exams for those going into Mexico from the US.
They're critical of the Mexican government's response to the pandemic.
