BioNTech soared as much as 7% on Friday following reports that its COVID-19 vaccine is effective against a variant strain recently found in the UK. The EU has secured access to 300 million more doses of Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine, the European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Friday morning.
If it orders all 300 million doses, this would double its total supply of the shot.
The EU has faced criticism for its slow vaccine rollout but ordering more doses is unlikely to solve the problem, due to supply problems and slow distribution.

The UK has approved the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna, which proved 94% effective in late-stage trials in November.
The UK government has ordered 17 million doses of Moderna's shot, but it's unlikely to roll out before March, according to a statement.
The UK's health and social care secretary Matt Hancock described the vaccine as "another weapon in our arsenal to tame this awful disease."
