Black people and other racial and ethnic minorities in the US have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, but white people have so far gotten most of the COVID-19 shots, according to state data reviewed by Business Insider.
Business Insider reviewed vaccination data for six states that have high percentages of Black residents and that publish the information by race.

BioNTech soars 7% after its vaccine appears to work against new variants of COVID-19

BioNTech soared as much as 7% on Friday following reports that its COVID-19 vaccine is effective against a variant strain recently found in the UK. According to a lab study conducted by Pfizer, the vaccine was effective in neutralizing the virus with the N501Y mutation of the spike protein. The EU has secured access to up to 300 million extra Pfizer doses, following criticism for its slow COVID-19 vaccine rollout

The EU has secured access to 300 million more doses of Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine, the European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Friday morning.
If it orders all 300 million doses, this would double its total supply of the shot.
The EU has faced criticism for its slow vaccine rollout but ordering more doses is unlikely to solve the problem, due to supply problems and slow distribution.

Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine becomes the third shot approved for use in the UK

The UK has approved the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna, which proved 94% effective in late-stage trials in November.
The UK government has ordered 17 million doses of Moderna's shot, but it's unlikely to roll out before March, according to a statement.
The UK's health and social care secretary Matt Hancock described the vaccine as "another weapon in our arsenal to tame this awful disease."

Two new "life-saving" treatments can now be used in UK hospitals, because they reduce the risk of death by 24% in people critically unwell with coronavirus - according to a preliminary study.
Tocilizumab and sarilumab, anti-inflammatory drugs usually used for arthritis, can reduce the length of time in hospital by 10 days, the UK government announced on Thursday.
