Global equities tumbled Friday after a new variant of COVID-19 that could prove more transmissible emerged in South Africa.
The South African rand plunged to a one-year low against the dollar, while safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc soared.
Dow Jones futures fell by 900 points, suggesting a drop at the start of trade in the holiday-shortened session later.

Foreign airlines remain uncertain on Queensland reopening

A number of industry bodies have again warned that foreign airlines may not be interested in returning to Queensland in the near future, given the uncertainty of COVID-19 border restrictions.
The Board of Airline Representatives of Australia, and Brisbane Airport both argued that airlines will struggle to plan the reinstatement of international routes to the Sunshine State without greater clarity on the state's planned reopening.

UK Warning: Storm Arwen set to hit 80mph winds

Powerful storm Arwen is set to move in across the UK later. It is bringing 75mph winds and warnings of travel disruption and damage to buildings.
The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for parts of northeast England and Scotland from this afternoon until Saturday morning.
Flying debris leading to injuries or danger to life is “likely” with people also told to expect damage to trees and buildings, public transport cancellations, road and bridge closures, power cuts and large waves.

UK urgently brings travel restrictions to stop COVID-19 spreading

Britain is bringing in travel restrictions for six African countries due to a new COVID-19 variant.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid tweeted that UKHSA is investigating a new variant. More data is needed but they are taking precautions now.
Six African countries will be added to the red list, flights will be temporarily banned, and UK travellers must quarantine.
The flights from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini and Zimbabwe will be suspended from 12pm today until 4am on Sunday.
From Sunday onwards, new arrivals in the UK will be required to quarantine in hotels.
